While seeking a model that helps build enterprise within traditional craft communities, the Teysha organisation has started up to inspire experience through travel and rich cultural diversity. Beginning in the tribal villages of Latin America, Teysha aims to help local artisans explore their opportunities throughout the western marketplace, by creating business models for their production and helping them to grow their local economies through the export of their goods.
Their first project lies with the Kuna women of Panama, to produce these traditionally woven comfort slip-ons. The workmanship involved is derived straight from the local crafts that have evolved in that region over centuries, and these women bring with them a lifetime of knowledge and skill to their work.
"Kuna Kicks are made from hand stitched Mola tapestries made by the indigenous Kuna women of Central America. Each textile has hundreds of tiny, intricate stitches and unique patterns derived from the nature around the Kuna. These indigenous women have been making these traditional tapestries for more than a century. Each shoe is made from a different cut of a completely unique hand-sewn piece of art, therefore each shoe is completely unique."
